What To Expect After Invisalign Treatment is Complete

Posted in Clear Aligners

Your smile will change as you go through Invisalign orthodontic treatment, but what can you expect when your treatment is complete? Our Calgary orthodontists explain.

Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign clear aligners can be used to resolve a variety of orthodontic issues ranging from simple to more complex. During treatment, your orthodontist will check your smile and track your progress carefully to ensure everything is going as planned. Because Invisalign aligners are made of clear plastic, you'll likely be able to see the changes in your smile as they happen.

By the end of treatment, you can have a straighter, healthier smile. So, is that it? Not quite.

Similar to any orthodontic treatment, when you've finished your Invisalign treatment, it may take a little while for your teeth to settle. This is where retainers come in.

After your Invisalign treatment, you'll likely need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in place while tissues around each tooth settle. Your dentist may recommend wearing a retainer full-time for the first six months following Invisalign treatment before you move to wearing one part-time for the next 6 months. Twelve months of retainer wear typically allows enough time for your jaw to firm up and hold your teeth in their new positions.

However, each person is different, and so is each Invisalign treatment plan. You may need to wear your retainer for more or less time depending on your unique case. Your dentist will give you detailed instructions on how and when to wear your retainer. And just like during treatment itself, the orthodontist will monitor your progress closely to ensure your smile is settling in as it should be.

Basic Oral Hygiene

In combination with your retainer, continuing basic oral care is an essential component of your post-Invisalign maintenance. After all, you'll want your newly straightened smile to stay healthy!

To that end, you should brush and floss twice a day, see your dentist routinely (as prescribed). If you damage your retainer or suspect something is amiss with your smile, you should be sure to contact your dentist right away so they can assess the issue and correct any potential problems.
